Akili McDowell plays the lead character, David, in the American coming-of-age-drama series, David Makes Man.  

The series is centered around a high-school student who tries to balance the two realities in his life: the fact that he is a student of an elite, affluent school while being the child of an impoverished family from a poor neighborhood.  

The primarily-black cast of the OWN series also features Alana Arenas, Phylicia Rashad, Nathaniel Logan McIntyre, Travis Coles, and Juanita Jennings, among others.
