Joaquín Cosío is a Mexican actor. Born in 1962 in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico, the 67-year-old is a veteran of cinema, debuting as far back as 2002.

He has 91 acting credits in various national and international movies and TV shows.   

His movie catalog boasts such diverse and acclaimed titles as Quantum of Solace, El Infierno, Savages, Ted, The Lone Ranger, A Night in Old Mexico, and Rambo: Last Blood.

His small-screen acting credits include Gentefied, Narcos: Mexico, The Strain, and Blue Demon.

7. Stars in the Netflix Comedy Drama, Gentefied

Cosío stars as Casimiro "Pop" Morales in the comedy-drama series, Gentefied.

The series follows Pop, owner of Mama Fina's taco shop in Boyle Heights, and his three grandchildren as they band together to stop Mama Fina's from going out of business due to the gentrification of the community.

The three grandchildren are played by J.J. Soria, Karrie Martin, and Carlos Santos. They are joined by Julissa Calderon, Jaime Alvarez, and Greg Ellis, among others in supporting roles.

The comedy series premiered on Netflix on February 21, 2020, and garnered positive acclaim, currently holding a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

6. Played a Bond Baddie in Quantum of Solace

Cosío played the villainous Bolivian General Medrano, one of the main antagonists in the 2008 espionage-thriller, Quantum of Solace.

The movie is the twenty-second movie in the James Bond franchise and marked Daniel Craig's second outing as the MI6 spy, James Bond. Other notable cast members include Olga Kurylenko, Judi Dench, Gemma Arterton, and Jeffrey Wright

General Medrano is the sadistic and remorseless Bolivian General and is the secondary antagonist in Quantum of Solace

5. Set to Make an Appearance in The Suicide Squad

Cosío is one of the confirmed names set to appear in the upcoming sequel to the 2016 DC Comics superhero movie, Suicide Squad, The Suicide Squad (or Suicide Squad 2). 

Directed by James Gunn -- who previously directed the Marvel superhero movie, Guardians of the Galaxy -- the movie faced numerous setbacks that pushed production to 2019, including multiple directorial line-up changes. 

The movie is in post-production and is aiming for an August 6, 2021, international release.   

The movie features an ensemble cast including Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, and Steve Agee, all reprising their roles from the 2016 movie.      

4. Played Don Neto in Narcos: Mexico

Prior to Gentefied, Cosío starred in another Netflix series -- this one not nearly as light-hearted --, Narcos: Mexico.

The crime-drama revolved around the illegal Mexican drug trade with Cosío portraying the Mexican drug lord and former-kingpin of the Guadalajara Cartel, Ernesto 'Don Neto' Fonseca Carrillo.

The second season premiered on February 13, 2020, and was a critical success, with Cosío's portrayal being singled out as one of the stand-outs.

3. Portrayed El Cochiloco in El Infierno

He portrayed another drug lord, El Cochiloco, in the 2010 satirical black-comedy crime-drama movie, El Infierno. 

The movie was a critical and commercial success, earning numerous accolades including a nomination in the Best Spanish Language Foreign Film category at the 25th Goya Awards.

Cosío's portrayal of El Cochiloco was highly acclaimed and landed him the Ariel Award and the National Board of Cinema's Best Actor Award

2. Numerous Starring Television Roles

Cosío's professional on-screen career began in 2002 and his career gained steam after his numerous starring roles in television series.

Among others, he had prominent roles in Mexican television shows like El Diez as Javier Rubalcava, Kdabra as Blas, and Lying to Live as Joaquín.

He also played Angel Guzman Hurtado / The Silver Angel in the Guillermo del Toro-directed thriller-drama series, The Strain, and Ignacio Vera in Blue Demon.

As of April 2020, Joaquín Cosío has a net worth of $3 million. A Mexican acting legend, he has had close to a hundred on-screen roles in movies and on television since his debut in 2002.

The latter half of the 57-year-old's career is arguably his most prolific and his most acclaimed, as he stars in not one but two Netflix series. He stars as the taco shop owner, Casimiro "Pop" Morales, in the light-hearted comedy-drama, Gentefied. He also plays the Mexican drug lord, Ernesto 'Don Neto' Fonseca Carrillo, in the thriller-crime-drama series, Narcos: Mexico.
