Former American Idol winner Jordin Sparks is an inspiration to people for more reasons than one. Not only is the 30-year-old Arizona-native a gifted singer/songwriter, but she is also the epitome of body positivity.
Her incredible 50-pound weight loss has provided the impetus for people struggling with their own weight to take stock of their life and change their lifestyle.
But Sparks' weight loss journey was not achieved overnight. It took a tremendous amount of dedication and patience. In this article, we chronicle her baby steps that led to the whopping 50-pound weight loss.
Change in Temperament
She decided she needed a lifestyle change when she had an epiphany at 20, going on 21, and got sick.
"I had gotten really sick. And I was about to celebrate my birthday and I was like, ‘I should be in the prime of my life right now. I shouldn’t be feeling like this. I really need to make my health a priority.’ And that’s what I did."
Sparks changed her lifestyle solely to be healthy, and as a by-product, she began to lose weight.
She Started Out by Jogging
"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step", they say. Jordin's journey started, by her own admission, with baby steps.
She also started out just going for a walk with her cousin. She soon began taking hiking longer distances. She also started hitting the gym and watching what she ate.
The first thing that Jordin makes sure is to stay hydrated. She typically consumes a gallon of water each day. As with all weight-loss diet, sugar, caffeine, red meat, and the sort are all a no-no.
In an interview, she admitted to rethinking about food, saying:
"Ask yourself, 'Am I really hungry, or am I having this because it looks good?' It doesn't have to be about sacrificing all the things you love. Just be conscious of portion size and why you're eating."
Her typical meal consists of the following:
- Breakfast: Protein Shake, Low-fat Yogurt, Granola
- First Lunch: Grilled Chicken with Brown Rice and Asparagus
- Second Lunch: Homemade Turkey and Beef Meatballs (four), Two Hard-Boiled Eggs
- Post-Lunch Snacks: Celery Sticks with Peanut Butter
- Dinner: Grilled Salmon, Caesar Salad
- Dessert: Frozen Yogurt with Strawberries and Mango
While her meal plan might seem like a lot, she does regulate her daily calorie intake to around 1,780 kcals.
Jordin's Workout Routine
When Jordin got serious about working out, she hired a personal trainer. The trainer makes her do full-body exercises that range from lunges to boxing to sprints.
Sparks has also professed her love for Zumba:
"I discovered a form of Zumba called Sensazao. [Two to three times a week] I burn 900 calories an hour doing what I love--dance"
Apart from hitting the gym religiously, she also takes hikes with her dog and swims in her free time.

Nowadays, the singer/songwriter and actor enjoys marital bliss with her husband, Dana Isaiah. They married in a ceremony in Hawaii on July 17, 2017.
Together, they have a son, Dana Isaiah Thomas Jr., born on May 2, 2018.
Jordin looks as fit and healthy now as she ever did. Her commitment to staying healthy serendipitously led to her miraculous 50-pound weight loss.
