Similarly, she also amazed us with yet another leadership trait, her determination. The actress posted a picture in early 2019 to showcase an inspiring body transformation.   

When Sidibe made her acting debut in 2009 with the movie Precious for which she earned a Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations, she weighed 300 pounds. However, she has lost 150 pounds since then and has become a motivational factor to millions of fans around the globe.

Gabourey Sidibe: Type 2 Diabetes Prompted Her To Lose Weight 

A woman with atypical body shape is being considered normal in today’s entertainment industry. However, when Grimsby’s actress started, she was often left disheartened about the comments about her body. 

Sidibe even received a piece of advice from a notable celebrity regarding her physique. According to Yahoo Entertainment, when Sidibe met actress John Cusack in an industry party, Cusack told her she should quit the acting profession because “it’s so image-conscious.”

Thankfully, Seven Psychopaths star brushed off the comment and continued with her acting until she became diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. The diagnosis led the actress to undergo laparoscopic bariatric surgery. Despite struggling to lose weight naturally for decades, she went through the operation in May of 2016.  

Sidibe exclaimed, “The surgery was not the easy way out. I was not cheating by getting it done. I would not have been able to lose as much as I’ve lost without it.”     

In this surgery, her doctor, Dr. Bradley Schwack, removed 80% of her stomach to reduce its capacity because of which she would not be able to eat hearty food at a time and soon feel full.  

Regimen Gabourey Sidibe Followed Post-Surgery

1. No More Soda And Junk Food

In her formative years, Sidibe was a massive fan of soda along with burgers, fries, and pizza. Perhaps, this unhealthy food choices might have aided in the weight gain.

When she had to lose weight because of the surgery, the first thing she did was cut out soda and all the junk foods. She started drinking ice-cold water with lemon slices as a way to keep her body hydrated.

In addition to this, she also started consuming 6-7 meals per day since her body could no longer digest heavy food consumption at once. 

Moreover, to counteract the effects of unhealthy food, Sidibe consumed the foods rich in carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats. 

2. Reduction Of Salt And Sugar Consumption

Gabourey would often binge on Oreos and cupcakes, but after the diagnosis, she decided to give up the addiction to such sugary foods.

Needless to say, controlling sugar consumption was necessary to treat diabetes, too. As a result, Gabourey gave up on her favorites, which definitely gave a beneficial effect. 

3. Exercise Routine From Her Trainer

The transformation from consuming healthy food was starting to show the result; however, for the fast result, she confided to exercise. 

In the initial stage, the American Horror Story actress started with low-impact exercises. Gabourey would walk on the treadmill, stair stepper, and Versaclimber as to put low pressure on her joints.

After some time, she moved on to other exercises like leg press, lunges, barbell curl, squats, and lat pull down.

Sidibe also posted a photo on Instagram in June 2017, where she followed aerial yoga to improve the physique. 

The Big C actress has opened up about the experience of going under the knife and dealing with depression in the memoir This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare, where she stated, 

“I could lose weight. That is a fact. But I am dope at any and every size. I am smart. I am funny. I am talented. I am gorgeous. I am black. I am fat. Sometimes I’m a bitch. At all times, I am a bad bitch. (The word bitch is pretty confusing, right?) “

Nevertheless, she is an inspiration to all who keep doubting their potential and give up the passion for chasing after the dream. She is going strong in the industry and enjoying the new body transformation.
